I Run Like a Girl.

And I don't mean:

I run like a kick-butt Ironman winner.

That's Chrissie Wellington.

Or an Olympic marathon winner.

And that there is Constantina Tomescu.

I mean, I run like this girl.

Oh sure;  I would like to think that I run with my core tight.

With my arms relaxed and elbows bent.  (Of course.)

With a gentle, lovely gazelle stride. (Natch.)

HOWEVER...I happen to know from my horrendous enlightening race photos that I swing my arms from side to side when I run. Like yay:

And that I tend to shuffle on my toes.

(which, coincidentally led to some very annoying foot pain, so I don't recommend it.)

I also happen to know that my left shoulder likes to hang out somewhere in the vicinity of my left earlobe, giving me a posture that Nostradamus wouldn't envy.

Furthermore, my hips tend to swing from side to side because my gluteus mediuses...medii? (read: buttocks) are not strong enough.

Meaning, if you saw me running toward you it would look something like this:

Alright, now who wants to be my running partner?? (I promise I'll make ya look reeeaalll good...)

NEXT POST: I've got a couple I'm working on so we'll see what shakes out first. (And for the record, this was not the crazy train post...that one's still in progress).

  1. hahahaaha Julie, I DIE! Thanks for once again making me laugh with your awesome doodles of your workout shenanigans. I would definitely be your running buddy if we lived closer, I'm not embarrassed by crazy runner stuff ;)

  2. you know I would be your running buddy too!! You've seen my faces...together we could be the dynamic duo!

  3. I'd run with you, only, I would have the tiara and wand!

  4. Well it may not be perfect running form, according to the 'experts' but I think it would make one rocking dance craze. Hmmm, let's call it the "Marathon" or is that one already taken??

  5. Oh, next time you run will you wear a pretty purple tutu? Ah the heck with that Olympic athlete type of running. I prefer your version.

  6. Adrian: I love hearing that I make people laugh :D It's good to know that when we find a race to run together you'll hang with me!

Meg: Dynamic duo, or *confusing* duo? Between your death stares and my mambo shuffle I think people would stay out of our way, don't you??

Meghan: They're yours! I'll bring them to our run :)

Texa: I like how you think! (although i don't think this will allow me to run marathon distance)

Bernie: Not me, but if you ever go watch a 5k you'll see plenty of tutus :P My version *is* more visually interesting, eh?

  7. This is hilarious...thanks for making me smile!

  8. yessss, that means we would dominate because people would clear the course or path for us!

  9. Rach: Thanks! Happy to do so :D

    Meg: We would be awesome!

  10. I wish by "I run like a girl" you actually meant "I run like Phoebe Buffay." BEST FRIENDS EPISODE EVER. And if you don't know what I'm talking about, well, then I'm really not sure we can keep being friends, JULIE. UGH.

But don't feel so bad. I run like a total idiot, so your way actually sounds kind of nice in comparison. And furthermore, YOU'RE RUNNING! YOU'RE DOING IT!!!! I, of course, am not. You win. What's new? :)

  11. andrea: ok, i remembered that she ran with Rachel in central park...but i had to check it on you tube. Phoebe ran waaaay faster than i do!!

And yes, you're right i am doing it so that counts for something. On a side note, it's so amazing that you can go to you tube and find *anything* that was ever on t.v. (i realize that makes me sound like i'm 180 years old).

  12. this is too funny! :)
I don't run anymore because my husband is not supposed to run so we do other things like biking, speed walking, and all the cardio machines. Plus, I am sure I am not a pretty runner either! LOL

  13. MEMEMEMEME!!!!! We could run together! I'll carry my bouquet of flowers and then we'd look REAL awesome :D

    ReplyDelete
  14. Mira: Absolutely; there are lots of things to do besides running that help you stay in shape :)

Dwija: Great! I'll cha-cha as you present flowers! Now we just need a mariachi band to follow us :)

  15. If it makes you feel better, I could be your running partner so we could match.... That probably doesn't help much though, huh?

  16. Thank you. I enjoyed the laugh.
Aren't those race photos invaluable for cluing you in on your running form....or in my case LACK of running form.

Sure. I'd run with you. Hopefully we wouldn't injure each other!!

    Nice to mee you today!

  17. KT80: Well, there is something to be said for symmetry :)

Heather: Thanks! I always try to smile if i know there's a photographer but, sometimes it's hard. And i never think about my form...clearly i should! Thanks for coming by :D

  19. I love it! I think I run exactly like that!! Im going to take up running regularly soon. Would it look better or worse if I ran with a tiara?

    ReplyDelete
  20. I want to be your running partner! I love your little run and its always nice to dance so I dont mind if you have a dance/run

    ReplyDelete
  21. Lindy: Thanks!

The Blue Zoo: Thank you! I say go with the tiara. For sure.

Toesthattwinkle: Let's do it. You can come up with the play list :)

  22. Kurt: Sweet! I could draft you...i wonder if it's still drafting when the person is half a mile ahead.

    ReplyDelete
  23. LOl! Well, you could run with me but I'm sure ya'd leave e in the dust... even with all the swshing!

  25. I LOVE your illustrations that go with this post! I don't have any race photos of my own yet, so I'm not sure how I look. Apparently they are pretty telling, so I'm not sure I want to get some now! LOL I'd still be your running partner, though. I'm sure I don't look great myself.

Stopping by from Comment Love Day. I hope you have a fantastic week!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Andrea: Thanks :) But really, i'm the slowest runner i know.

Renae: Thank you! It's hard to run 'properly', isn't it?

Karen: Thanks! Yes, race photos are generally pretty awful!

  27. I, too, look ridiculous when I run. Good on you for trying! Hahaha

  28. Visiting (again) from comment love Sunday. Your drawings make me laugh. But it's great you know how you run because now you can fix it! Good luck.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Kaley: Hehe. It sounds like a lot of us do :) Thanks!

Laura: Glad you're back :) Good point, thank you!

  30. Maybe not the best running form but you look like a great dancer. You are so funny.

For a few years I waved at the camera every time I passed the sport pict people at a race. After looking at all the pictures of myself (the chubby, smiling, waving..oh yea runner) I decided that I should not wave at the camera but that I should just run and look like a runner.

  31. This makes me think of that episode of Friends where Rachael and Phoebe go running in Central Park and Phoebe runs like a spaz! Hilarious!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Elena: Why thank you...I *did* take dance classes when i was a kid, so glad you can tell :P You're right, i should really just focus on running, since that's why i'm there!

Breann: Thanks! You are the second person to make that reference :D

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think you're hilarious (and inspiring for that matter...a triathlon? You rock) I would so be your running buddy and I daresay I would make you look good.

    ReplyDelete
  34. HAHHAHAHHA you are SOOO hilarious!! I love your drawings!!! :D

    <3 Belly B

    ReplyDelete
  35. gin: Thanks!! Just so you know, there is a huge difference between a sprint tri and an ironman of course! Most of us can muster up enough get up and go to do the sprint (a wetsuit makes the swim a shoe in)!

Belly B: Thank you! Glad you stopped by :D

  36. I'd love to run with you - I always worry that I look like Phoebe in Friends and that my arms are all over the place!

    {Found you via Comment Love Sunday - sorry it's a bit late}

    ReplyDelete
  37. Han: Thanks so much for coming by! I had no idea this post would conjure up Phoebe so much!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Are you kidding? That's the cutest thing ever...it looks like you're dancing a cha-cha! Well it made me smile anyway :-) And its inspiring me to get back to working out again too so thank you. Thanks for stopping by my blog too, your blog is great glad to read you!

  39. ahhahaha! I learned something similar from my last set of race photos! Here I was thinking I was all sporty-looking, like I knew what I was doing... nope.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Jenn: Thanks!! I hope it did inspire you; that would be cool :)

XLMIC: Yeah, they're the worst. Maybe it's better not to know how we look :P

    ReplyDelete
  41. hahahahaha I am a new reader and this is just absolutely hilarious! your blog is great!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Hahaha! That's hilarious!! But ... you already know my dark non-triathlon secrets (despite my warning for real triathletes to stay awy - so you MUST know that I'm the one who'll make YOU look good!!

Thanx for following - glad you did, 'cos now I've found your blog!

  43. Like you're shaking invisible maracas? Ole!

I run like a snail if it makes you feel any better... and whine.. and sneeze... yawn... grab my knee in pain even =) oh dear.

    I bet you're a running machine =)

    ReplyDelete
  44. Clearly, you've seen me run.

Although I have to say -- of course you run like a girl, what else would you run like? When is your race, BTW?

    Allie

    ReplyDelete
  45. Jenn: You sound like an entertaining runner!

Allie: Well, some people run like strong, powerful girls as opposed to first-graders :) In answer to your question: i have a half marathon at the end of the month, a sprint tri in july and another in august, and the full marathon at the end of november.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I like your gazelle-ish grace.

And, for the record: I bet you have fun "running", but we all know you're really dancing. :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. ShanimalsCrackers: Thanks! I'm known as graceful in these here parts. And yes, i like to dance, so i'm hoping the music at the Rock n Roll half marathon next week will help make up for the lack of training.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Well, at least you finish. Practice makes perfect?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Yes! Run like Phoebe! BTW, I have an award for you on my blog if you'd like to have it.

    ReplyDelete
  50. iris: finishing is the plan. Practice makes for...better shuffling :P

Mollie: of course i would like to have an award from you! thanks so much!!
